The book is 255mm x 255 mm casebound, 208 pages full colour throughout, over 370 illustrations, RRP £24.95, ISBN 0-9547126-0-9. In a broad overview it tells the story of corrugated iron churches, chapels, mission halls and related buildings. It features archive and contemporary material illustrating this almost-forgotten part of our industrial and architectural heritage. In attempting to explain how these buildings were produced, who they were for, and why we should consider them to be important, the book shows how these buildings reflected the society in which they were created and flourished. A photographic survey gathers together just some of the surprising number of these buildings which still survive.
We are now researching a documentary film so all further contributions of information will be gratefully received. The mission halls, chapels and churches were built economically and quickly to service the needs of small groups of worshippers from about the 1870s onwards. Often referred to as 'Tin Tabernacles' they were built as temporary accommodation and the vast majority of them have already disappeared. Many were built as prefabricated kits bought from builders merchants. They were quite often dismantled and moved to new locations so one building may have served several communities. The building shown on this site are mainly located in the UK but we are attempting to compile a comprehensive database listing as many as possible of these structures built using corrugated iron or zinc galvanised sheets. We welcome information, photographs and press cuttings about tin churches, chapels and mission huts in your area. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy looking at the pictures and reading the information on these pages.
